Same Sex Marriage – My Thoughts on the Matter
Every time I get on the Internet, I have seen a lot news and Facebook posts coming from my friends and colleagues about the approval of same sex marriage in the United States. Apparently, the US Supreme Court has ruled out that same sex marriage is now a right in the country. The news sparked jubilation among those who support same sex marriage. It’s in the news on the television, radio and social media.
As a professional wedding photographer, I couldn’t agree more with the decision.
I have a lot of gay friends in the community and I have to admit, being around them is quite fun. In fact, I remember a time when I was picked as the official wedding photographer for my gay friend Dan’s wedding. At first, he and his partner Todd were a bit hesitant to ask me, since I definitely had no idea that they were together. Dan has been a good friend of mine for many years now and I definitely had some idea that he was, well, gay. But it never mattered to me until he told me about his wedding. To be clear, I wasn’t angry that he was gay; I was surprised because being good friends, he would’ve told me in the first place! Of course, both Dan and Todd apologized and explained why it took them a long time to finally spread the news.
I guess I could understand the reason why they decided to keep quiet about their relationship for years. There are some who would never understand the concept of marriage equality.
I remember a funny conversation I had with a complete stranger on the phone. I had some issues with my Broadconnect.com VOIP service, so I called up technical support for help. While talking with the girl on the phone, we started talking about current events. So when the topic about marriage equality came, I asked the agent what her standing on the issue is. She directly told me that she’s quite happy because she and her partner can finally come out and get married without fear of being ostracized by society.
To my surprise, I was not able to respond to her statement. Chances are, even if same-sex marriage is already a right in the United States, there will always be people who will never understand the concept of marriage equality. Whenever I hear people getting angry at their relatives or friends for being gay or lesbian, I’d probably give them a piece of my mind. This person is pretty much still a human being. Why would you ostracize or neglect him/her just because of he loves a man or she loves a woman?
Truth be told, most of my professional wedding photographer buddies are excited about getting more clients. And to be honest, I am also excited at the thought. I always capturing that exact moment when two human beings profess their undying love for each other, whether they’re straight or gay.
And I think that is true love.
